Day 1 proper having arrived in Marrakech the day before. We drive from Marrakech to the provincial town of Ouarzate across the High Atlas. Superb exposure of the bedrock and a well engineered road with numerous switchbacks. On the roadside there are numerous small stalls selling aragonite and calcite geodes.
Ouazarette is where we have lunch and stock up on any supplies we want to take on the trek eg alcohol.
After lunch we drive to El Kelaa where we meet the mule crew and start the trek. It instantly starts raining. Fortunately its only a short walk to our overnight stay in Alt Youl where we have an excellent dinner and have a small lodge to stay in.
